Description

The Content & News department of the University of Virginia Office of University Communications seeks a proven editor and storyteller to help us continue to grow UVA Today and affiliated news products.

The ideal candidate will have demonstrated experience managing and collaborating with writers, editors, photographers, artists and others in a deadline-driven daily news environment. Essential skills and experiences include: editing, writing, story and content planning, coaching, proofing digital products, collaborating with creative and presentation team members, leading in a team environment, and proven news judgment that drives audience growth through timely and newsworthy content.

Our mission is to tell the story of the University of Virginia by producing and distributing compelling, strategic content that elevates the reputation of the institution.

Key editorial products include:
  • UVA Today Daily Report: a 100,000 subscriber daily (M-F) newsletter that publishes news and information to inform the UVA community and beyond, and serves to generate earned media coverage through timely and newsworthy content about the University, its people and its activities.
  • UVA This Month: a monthly newsletter delivered to nearly 300,000 recipients, featuring the most compelling and strategic content produced by our office and across UVA. Its audience includes all current students, faculty, staff and parents of current students, as well as all alumni.
  • The UVA Research Digest: a bimonthly newsletter highlighting stories about UVA's research enterprise, featuring content that emphasizes groundbreaking research and innovative initiatives that elevate the University's reputation for conducting research that improves the human condition.
  • News.virginia.edu : The site of UVA Today and home of our digital news platform.


Position duties:
  • Closely collaborate with Managing Editor to plan the content of UVA Today and affiliated editorial products.
  • Directly manage a subset of UVA Today news associates and writing interns.
  • Collaborate with direct reports and others to generate news stories and other content ideas.
  • Ensure productivity of direct reports, and manage production of daily and longer-term content to meet deadlines.
  • Edit copy for accuracy, balance, style and to align as needed with strategic priorities of the University of Virginia.
  • Collaborate with communicators and others across Grounds to incorporate compelling stories produced at various schools and units into our editorial products.
  • Proof editorial newsletter products such as the UVA Today Daily Report to ensure its elements are accurate, concise, compelling and functioning properly prior to distribution.
  • Lead in the editorial planning and production of an individual product such as the UVA Research Digest, or UVA This Month (to be determined).
  • Assist Managing Editor in the planning, assigning and management of the production of projects, long-form stories and other content that is not driven by daily deadlines.
  • Write daily or other stories and content as needed, with an expectation of regular contributions.
  • Work with assigned reports to identify opportunities to pursue earned media coverage from content produced and distributed by Content & News.
  • Contribute writing, editing and proofing duties occasionally during off-hours including nights and weekends, as needed.


Required education and experience:
  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications or related field.
  • 5 years of related experience, with at least 3 years of editorial management experience in a daily news environment at a newspaper, higher education institution, corporate environment or comparable setting Proven ability to write, edit and produce content and editorial products on deadline.
  • Experience with digital delivery and presentation of content (email newsletters, website, etc.)


Preferred experience:
  • Demonstrated experience in both journalism and in higher education communications, with proven ability in a digital news environment.
  • Demonstrated experience producing and editing multiple storytelling formats and modes, including basic news, features, long-form and project reports, social media, listicles, etc.
  • Demonstrated experience developing content plans in support of organizational strategic priorities.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This is primarily a sedentary job involving extensive use of desktop computers. The job does occasionally require traveling some distance to attend meetings, and programs.

COVID Vaccination Requirement

The University of Virginia expects all current and new employees (UVA Health System and Academic), to be vaccinated against COVID-19.

If hired to work within the University Health System, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to receive the vaccination. Employees may request a medical or religious exemption from vaccination.

If hired to work on the Academic side of the University, excluding the School of Medicine, School of Nursing, UPG, and the Health Systems Library, you will be required to provide proof of vaccination or be willing to submit to mandatory, weekly prevalence testing. Employees that are working 100% remotely will not be subject to weekly prevalence testing; however, if the employee works on UVA Grounds (including the Medical Center) even intermittently, then they are required to be tested for COVID-19 once per week on an indefinite basis and follow masking mandates.
