POSITION OBJECTIVE

The Writer/Editor conveys the excellence and aspirations of Case Western Reserve with prose that is engaging and eloquent. This individual will match deep intellectual curiosity with exceptional mastery of narrative and tone to help enhance the university’s stature across the nation and within the local community. The keys to success in this position are two-fold: first, a profound appreciation of the work of research universities, matched with an ability to explain complex subjects in a way that is accessible and compelling. The successful candidate will possess the ability to write and edit across multiple media – that is, from longer magazine stories to shorter print pieces and even more concise copy for the web.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Promote the university by recognizing and writing about its unique and/or striking aspects: its people, programs, achievements, initiatives, and more. (15%)
  2. Engage with faculty, staff and students across the university to identify promising subjects for stories, whether profiles or features, trend pieces or other types of articles. (15%)
  3. Identify and develop stories that help promote the university’s sense of community, whether they involve a unique accomplishment (as part of their work or their off time), a rallying effort for others, or other activities that intrigue, amuse or inspire. (15%)
  4. Demonstrate the power of effective storytelling, and seize those moments when a well-told tale can attract significant attention and acclaim for the university. (15%)
  5. Show comprehensive command of language, deep understanding of structure and tone, and full mastery of crisp writing. (15%)
  6. Illustrate the nuance and dimensions of academic efforts – including complicated, technical matters - in a way that captures their meaning in a manner that is accurate, clear and comprehensible. (15%)
  7. Communicate effectively with colleagues and supervisor(s). (10%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  1. Perform other duties as assigned. (<1%)

CONTACTS

Department: Daily contact with UMC team members to complete projects.

University: Regular contact with faculty and staff.

External: Occasional communication with external contacts.

Students: Regular contact with students.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No direct supervisory responsibility.

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: 2 to 4 years of writing and editing experience required.

Education/Licensing: Bachelor’s degree in relevant field.

REQUIRED SKILLS

  1. Excellent interviewing, writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  2. Ability to handle multiple assignments simultaneously.
  3. Strong interpersonal skills.
  4. Mac and/or PC platforms.
  5. Proficiency in working with Microsoft Word documents.
  6. Familiarity with web content management systems.
  7. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  8. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS

General office environment. The employee will perform repetitive motion using computer mouse and keyboard.
