Description

NEH Digital Publishing Intern: French Paintings Catalogue, European Paintings and Sculpture
Position Type: Part Time Temporary - Ends June 2024
Weekly Hours: 20 hours per week
Hourly Rate: $20
The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art invites all people to explore the art in its care, and through its vast collections, the depths, and complexities of human experiences.

We strive to create a sense of belonging, where staff and volunteers can do meaningful work connecting people to art. We create an informed, invested group of staff and volunteers through shared values and open, direct, and respectful communication. We embrace IDEAS (Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Access, and Sustainability) in every aspect of our ideals and aspirations, as we believe these values to be paramount to success.

Each staff member and volunteer will embody the institution’s commitments and agrees to exhibit behaviors that align with them. We hold one another to these expectations so that, together, we may know, own, energize and sustain our culture and the institution for generations to come.
DIGITAL PUBLISHING INTERN
The NEH Digital Publishing Intern will support the ongoing publication of the museum’s first digital catalogue of its French Paintings Collection.

Technical experience is not required as training will be offered, but the candidate should be comfortable in a digital environment. This role does not require a deep knowledge of art history and will not include conducting research or writing for the publication.

Candidates with strong digital skills and ability to learn new technologies quickly are encouraged to apply. All candidates are encouraged to apply, especially those from historically underrepresented groups in the museum field.

Key Accountabilities/Essential Functions
  1. French Paintings Catalogue: The catalogue is comprised of French paintings and pastels from 1700 to 1945 in the collection of The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, with the bulk of pictures stemming from the late-nineteenth century. The NEH Digital Publishing Assistant will support the monthly digital publishing cycle by performing back-end content input, formatting copy into markup language, and debugging code as needed. Training for working with markup language will be provided.
  2. Migration of catalogue content to a new publishing platform: The catalogue has been published on Quire, Getty’s digital publishing framework, since February 2021, but recently Getty released a new version of Quire. The main focus of this role will be to convert catalogue content into a new syntax.
  3. Writing Alternative Text (Alt-Text): Alt-text clearly and concisely describes what a sighted reader would see in an image. To improve accessibility, the NEH Digital Publishing Assistant will write alt-text for all images and comparative figures in the catalogue. A knowledge of art history will help in this endeavor. Training for writing alt-text will be provided.
